A Discussion Guide for Books, Movies and Plays

As your child reads–or as you read to your child–be sure to ask some questions along the way:

A. Setting

  1. Where does the story take place?
  2. What is the place like?
  3. Is there anything I can tell from the setting, even though it does not say it directly? For example: I know it is winter if there is snow on the ground.
  4. Can you tell when the story took place? How did you know?

B. Characters

  1. Who are the main characters?
  2. Do I like or dislike them? Why?
  3. Who is the most important character in the story? Why?
  4. Do any of the characters change in the story how?
  5. Does a character do things that are good or bad? What kind of things?

C. Plot

  1. What are the main things that have happened in the story
  2. Can you guess what is going to happen next? What clues can I use?
  3. What would I have done differently if I had been one of the characters?

D. Mood

  1. How did I feel while reading this story? Why did I fell that way?
  2. What was the most exciting thing that happened?
  3. What was the funniest or saddest or strangest thing that happened?
  4. What do I remember most about this story?
