Reading comprehension involves much more than just decoding words and reading fluently. Children need to learn how to understand multiple meanings, metaphors, and idioms, detect ambiguity, and understanding perspective shifts. Increasing their vocabulary and grammar knowledge also extends their ability to comprehend what they read on both the literal and inferential and critical levels.

Students, grades 4-7, will learn strategies to help them better comprehend written and oral language. Skills targeted:

  • Vocabulary (including prefixes and suffixes and multiple meaning words)
  • Figurative language (Similes, metaphors, personification, hyperbole and idioms)
  • “Reading between the lines” /inferring meaning from text
  • Prediction
  • Generating main ideas
  • Identifying character traits
